A frequent issue many users have with Windows 10 appears right at the start when they upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8. This tends to warn users that the ‘Get Windows 10’ (GWX) app is incompatible.

Alternatively, users could find that the application isn’t showing up. This will usually cause the update to fail, but there’s no need to worry, as there are a couple of ways to solve this problem:

• Open the Control Panel, run Windows Update, and ensure the PC is fully current. If the updates fail, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.³
• Go to Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. Click ‘Download Now’ under the “Create Windows 10 installation media” heading, save and run the tool with a USB device or other compatible media, and run it on the PC you want to upgrade. If this did not work when Windows 10 launched, try the tool again, as it has received many new updates since.
• Ensure the hardware DEP (Disable Data Execution Prevention) is turned on in your system BIOS; please refer to your system’s manual for more information. If problems still exist, open the start menu, search for “Performance” in the search bar, open the option that states “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows,” click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and select the option “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select,” then reboot and try again.
